TALES & TIDBITS: brought to you by C. Michael Traw

March 9, 2010

Happy Birthday to Jennifer Walsh (10), "Princess" Greenwood (12), Steve Austin (13), Marcia Sternin (15), Lynn Haydis (16) and Kathleen Harper Jones (17th).

I did have a chance to catch the final weekend of SPELLING BEE at the Foothill Music Theater. Delightful show. I had never seen it before but I could not imagine a better production. Sat with a smile on my face the whole way through.

Have heard nice things about LADY BE GOOD, but won't see it until March 27, now playing at the Theater on the Square. Call 800-838-3006 for more info. Tabard has announced its five show season next year highlighted by DRIVING MISS DAISY with James Creer directed by Doug Baird and FOLLIES in Concert directed by Diane Milo. Those should be "don't miss' shows.

West Valley Light Opera opening this week with SWEET CHARITY has also announced its season: WHITE CHRISTMAS, SPELLING BEE, and a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical which was their last musical together.

Bill Starr will direct Lyric Theater's CAROUSEL next year. He sure works a lot. Suunyvale will do SWEENY TODD, GODSPELL, ANNIE, and CABARET next year. I think they have selected their directors already but no confirmation of that. Add Don Masuda to the current show URINETOWN. That cast is sure having fun. Woodminster Summer Theater is doing HAIRSPRAY, THE MUSIC MAN, and PAINT YOUR WAGON.

Interesting article in the MERCURY NEWS about the San Jose Rep's future on Sunday. It seems the City's auditors do not expect it to last past the summer. Jim Reber who founded the Rep is still in there fighting. It is interesting to note that some of the smaller companies in the area are doing fine , but the two major companies AMT and the Rep both have had such financial problems.

I would be very interested in seeing how successful the Broadway in Concert Series is doing. I did notice some local talent recently in THE MUSIC MAN. John Musgrove as the Mayor, Annmarie Martin as Mrs. Paroo, Mary Elizabeth Enmann as Mrs. Shinn, plus ensemble members Mike Hugill, Patrick Kelleher, and Brad Handshy. I didn't know any of the other people. MOST HAPPY FELLA opens this weekend.

Dining at Bella Mia last weeks was birthday boy, Gary Daum.

See you "On Down the Road!"
