South Bay Musical Theatre Presents

Gypsy

May 21 to June 11, 2016. Music by Jule Styne. Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Book by Arthur Laurents. Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.

Gypsy

Gypsy tells the gripping story of Mama Rose, the ultimate “stage mother,” as she aggressively fosters her children's theatrical careers, and then struggles to cope with one daughter’s rise to burlesque stardom. Loosely based on the memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, the story provides an intimate look at on-stage and off-stage theatrical life, with all of its trials, triumphs, laughs, and heartbreaks. Jule Styne’s outstanding score is packed with hits like Let Me Entertain You; Everything’s Coming Up Roses; You Gotta Get a Gimmick; and Together, Wherever We Go. Numerous critics have called Gypsy “the greatest American musical,” and it has been successfully revived on Broadway four times since its 1960 premiere. With its fascinating characters, powerful score, and rich plot lines, Gypsy is a shining example of musical theatre art and an evening of sure-fire entertainment.
