The musical Mame traces its origins back to 1955 when Patrick Dennis published the novel Auntie Mame. The book became a Broadway play the next year, a movie two years after that, and by 1966 it was given a wonderful score by Broadway legend Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly, Mack and Mabel, and later, La Cage Aux Folles) and was back on Broadway again. The musical won Tony Awards for Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur—setting them both on the path to long, illustrious careers—and then went on to run for more than 1,500 performances over four years on the Great White Way.

Over its 56-year history, South Bay Musical Theatre has staged productions of Mame in 1969, 1991, and 2001, and is happy to revisit its timeless message once again as its opening show for the 2018-2019 season. The show is blessed with several strong female leading roles, which attracted some very talented actresses to our production. Mary Melnick, who plays the title role, has appeared 14 times in SBMT musicals. Karen DeHart, who plays Mame’s “bosom buddy” Vera, has a long list of theatrical credits all over the Bay Area. She was most recently seen on the SBMT stage as Tessie Tura in the 2016 production of Gypsy, for which she received a TBA nomination.

Our two leading ladies are joined by a strong cast of 27 performers, pictured below, who are devoting long hours to bring this uplifting merriment to our stage. This is a Broadway classic that doesn’t come around that often, so make sure you get your tickets before they are sold out.
